“My Life with the Walter Boys” is a young adult novel by Ali Novak, first published in 2014. It tells the story of Jackie Howard, a 15-year-old city girl who is orphaned and sent to live with her mother’s best friend, Katherine Walter, on her sprawling Colorado ranch. The ranch is also home to Katherine’s 12 sons, ranging in age from toddlers to young adults.
Jackie, who is used to a structured and predictable life, is thrown into chaos by the boisterous and messy Walter boys. They are everything she is not: loud, dirty, and always up for a good time. Jackie initially clashes with the boys, but she eventually begins to bond with them and learns to embrace their unconventional lifestyle.
The novel is a coming-of-age story about Jackie’s journey of self-discovery. As she adjusts to life on the ranch, she learns to let loose, have fun, and appreciate the importance of family. She also develops romantic feelings for one of the Walter boys, which leads to further complications.
